FRAGONIA (Taxandria fragrans), Australian oil

From 2026 Study Tour to Australia

by Vera Borsos-Matovina MScF.

In March 2026 I was a part of a group attending Australia Study Tour organized by IFEAT.

One of the endemic Australian plant is FRAGONIA -Taxandria fragrans (J.R.Wheeler & N.G.Marchant), Family Myrtaceae.

Taxandria fragrans is a shrub species that is endemic to an area in south western Western Australia.

The shrub grows to a maximum height of approximately 2 meters (7 ft). It blooms from February to May producing white flowers. It is often found in wet areas such as swamps, rivers and valleys in coastal areas along the South West region of Western Australia where it grows in peaty sandy or loamy soils over laterite.

The Fragonia essential oil has cineolic aroma with a citrus note.

 Aroma compound % Abundance
1.8 cineole 23-33%
⍺-pinene 22-31%
linalool 6-13%
geraniol 1-3%
⍺- terpineol 5-8%
myrtenol 4-5%

From chemical composition of Fragonia essentil oil we can conclude its uses.

Taxadria fragrance is in the same family as Tea tree, Ravensara, Niaouli, Eucalyptus radiata, other eucalyptus species where the properties of terpene alcohol 1.8 cineol and monoterpene hydrocarbon ⍺-pinene combine synergistically . This synergy could be called “the cold and flu synergy”(1).

Compound 1.8 cineole has antimicrobial properties and antioxidant activity (1,2). Presents of ⍺-pinene gives the oil its anti inflammatory properties and antioxidant property (1,3).

Here are the primary uses and benefits of Fragonia essential oil:

  • Respiratory Care: Fragonia is highly effective for loosening congestion, relieving sinuses, and helping with cold, flu, and bronchitis symptoms.

  • Respiratory Issues & Immune System: It acts as an expectorant and antimicrobial agent, helping to clear airways and boost immunity, particularly through inhalation.

  • Muscular Relief: The oil has anti-inflammatory and analgesic (pain-relieving) properties, making it effective in massage blends for achy muscles and joints.

  • Skin Care: Its antimicrobial properties make it useful for treating acne, infections, and soothing skin conditions.

How to Use Fragonia Oil:

  • Diffusion: Add to a diffuser for a refreshing, floral, and woody aroma that clears the air.

  • Topical Application: Dilute with a carrier oil (e.g., jojoba or almond) for massages, treating skin conditions, or applying to pulse points.

  • Inhalation/Steam: Use in a steam bath or with salt pipes to target respiratory issues.

  • Baths: Add diluted oil to warm bath water for relaxation.
