The Advantages of Bergamot Oil: A Natural Approach to Healthy, Radiant Skin

Bergamot (Citrus bergamia) belongs to the Rutaceae family and is classified as a hybrid of bitter orange and lemon. Like most citrus essential oils, it is produced through a cold-press extraction process, which involves puncturing the fruit rinds to extract the oil. Bergamot oil typically exhibits a greenish to brownish-yellow hue and has a subtle bitter aromatic profile. Its fresh citrus and floral scent make it a popular ingredient within the cosmetic industry. At Plant’s Power, we offer both Bergamia (Bergamot) Peel Oil that is free of furocoumarins (FCF) and Cold-Pressed Bergamot Oil containing bergapten.

The chemical composition of Bergamot oil contains volatile (93-96%) and non-volatile (4-7%) components. The volatile components are comprised of monoterpene and sesquiterpene hydrocarbons including limonene (25-53%), linalool (2-20%), linalyl acetate (15-40%), γ-terpinene and β-pinene1. Whereas, the non-volatile components are comprised of pigments, waxes, and furocoumarins (ie. Bergapten)1. While furocoumarins make up only about 0.44% they account for the phototoxicity of Bergamot that can cause severe burns and darken skin upon exposure to the sun3. For this reason, furcoumarin-free Bergamot Oil is specifically designed for perfumery and cosmetic uses1,2. This is obtained through an additional process called molecular distillation that removes the furocoumarins from the cold-pressed bergamot oil3.

Bergamot oil containing the furocoumarin component is commonly utilized in the manufacturing of candles, teas, wash-off products, and as a flavoring agent in the culinary industry. Bergamot FCF oil is extensively used in topical skincare formulations due to the removal of furocoumarins, which are phototoxic. As a natural cleanser, it aids in the removal of dirt and impurities when included in skincare products. Additionally, bergamot oil has skin-balancing properties that help to unclog pores and regulate excess oil production.2.

Bergamot oil is recognized for its cicatrisant properties, which enhance the healing of wounds by promoting tissue regeneration, stimulating cellular growth, and reducing the visibility of scars. These properties support cellular renewal and collagen production, facilitating the smooth closure of lesions. Additionally, bergamot oil can assist in evening out skin discolorations by promoting uniform distribution of pigments and melanin, resulting in a more uniform skin tone4. It is also a beneficial component in natural deodorant formulations, owing to its distinctive fragrance and antimicrobial properties that help prevent bacterial growth responsible for body odour4.

While bergamot oil has a distinctive, pleasant aroma, it  harmonizes well with Clary Sage, Frankincense, Mandarin, Jasmine, Black Pepper, Cypress, Geranium, Nutmeg, Sandalwood, Orange, Rosemary, Vetiver and Ylang-Ylang essential oils. It pairs particularly well with other citrus oils4. Due to its versatility, bergamot oil is frequently used as an ingredient in various formulations.  However, it is important to consider the final product and adhere to safety guidelines when using the oil. The recommended usage levels differ depending on the type of bergamot oil—0.4% for expressed oil and up to 20% for rectified oil3.
